Waterfront Park, Sunset Drive closure

On Wednesday, May 21, Waterfront Park from Sunset Drive to the Boat Lock – including Harmony Bridge, Concession Plaza and Tugboat Beach – will be temporarily closed to the public to allow improvement work to take place at Waterfront Park Stage. A road closure is also scheduled for Sunset Drive at the Waterfront Park entrance from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The overall refresh of Waterfront Park Stage aims to replace the aging structure, creating more opportunities for events and expanding the park area for public enjoyment when events are not taking place. The project includes partially filling in the Waterfront Park lagoon, upgrading electrical services, and installing a new low-maintenance event stage and canopy. The $1.8 million project is being funded in partnership between the City of Kelowna and the Province of British Columbia Ministry of Tourism, Arts Culture and Sport through the Destination Development Grant Funding. Once work is completed later this spring, the updated Waterfront Park Stage will continue to be an important asset for local events, festivals, and programs, while providing greater flexibility for organizers and adding more spectator capacity at the park. The closure of Waterfront Park and Sunset Drive is necessary to ensure the safety of workers and the public while the canopy structure is delivered and offloaded to the site. Visitors to the area are asked to follow the instructions of safety personnel, posted construction signage, and fencing to ensure everyone's safety while commuting through the area. During the closure, street parking along Sunset Drive near Waterfront Park entrance and wherever marked is prohibited and vehicles may be towed.
