Overpass opening marks milestone in City infrastructure
An exciting new connection linking people working and living on both sides of Highway 97 is officially open. This overpass not only enhances accessibility but also connects various neighbourhoods, fostering greater community integration, economic development and ease of movement across the city, whether walking, biking or rolling.
“A growing city needs a transportation system that prioritizes connectivity and accessibility, while also reducing traffic congestion,” said Mayor Tom Dyas. “The Bertram Multiuse Overpass showcases what we can achieve when all levels of government work together. With consistent and reliable infrastructure funding, local governments are empowered to prioritize the projects that matter most to their communities and deliver meaningful, lasting results.”
This essential link between Bertram Street and Rowcliffe Park will provide seamless access for pedestrians and cyclists. As the city continues to grow, it will integrate into the broader active transportation network, fostering safer, more sustainable mobility for all.
“The Bertram Multiuse Overpass is a great example of how investments in local infrastructure priorities are improving the lives of Canadians,” said the Honourable Stephen Fuhr Member of Parliament for Kelowna, British Columbia. “By connecting neighbourhoods and enhancing the active transportation network, this project will make it easier and safer for people to move across Kelowna.”
"Everyone deserves to have a safe and convenient way to travel through their community – no matter their abilities,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs. “That’s why we continue to invest in projects like this, as we work together to make daily travel safe and accessible as another way to improve the lives of British Columbians.”
The $12.1-million project was funded through a collaborative partnership between the City of Kelowna, the Government of Canada, which contributed $4 million through the Canada Community Building Fund administered by the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM), and the Province of BC, which provided $7.2 million through the Growing Communities Fund.
