New Artist in Residence has climate focus

News Release

The City’s next Artist in Residence has been selected and is hard at work on a project to be shared with the community this fall.

Local artist, Lucas Glenn, who recently completed his Masters of Fine Arts through the University of Victoria, was chosen for this annual program. This year’s theme is climate change and the environment and Glenn is working on a mobile, interactive art installation made from repurposed materials that explores this theme.

The project is called M.A.S.S.I.V.E., which stands for Make-shift Anthropocene Symbiosis Station and Interface for Vibrant Exchange. M.A.S.S.I.V.E. will be installed in various Kelowna parks this fall and will feature small, interactive eco-contraptions made to help human beings, and non-humans, adapt to a changing climate. One of these contraptions uses a modified gameboy to interface with what we call nature. The community will interact with parts of the exhibit and the artist on-site.

"It’s an honour to be selected as the City of Kelowna resident artist,” said Glenn. “I’m excited by this project’s potential for vibrant exchange with Kelowna’s communities – both human and non-human.”

The Artist in Residence program supports projects that will take place in Kelowna. The Program is intended to broaden the community’s experience with arts and culture and stimulate thoughtful conversations.

"We are delighted to continue the Artist in Residence program and can’t wait for people to see what’s in store for this year,” said Christine McWillis, Cultural Services Manager. "Our Artist in Residence program continues to be well received by our community and we hope Lucas’ project will inspire our community to think creatively and critically about their relationship with the environment and each other."
