News Release

Kelowna residents can look forward to smoother, safer and more connected travel in the coming years as the City advances 55 transportation projects across the community in 2026. Twenty‑five projects are planned for construction or have already started and are carried over from last year, with the remaining projects underway in planning and design.

“Transportation improvements make it easier and safer to get around our growing city,” said Brittany Hallam, Integrated Transportation Department Manager. “From road upgrades and active transportation improvements to transit amenities, these investments strengthen neighbourhood connections and help keep Kelowna moving. Close to $87 million is dedicated to transportation and transit projects in the 2026 budget.”

Eight key highlights from this year’s transportation projects include:

Transportation Accelerator Program (TAP)
Construction is anticipated to begin this spring on four TAP projects that will improve safety, expand capacity and strengthen key connections across Kelowna’s transportation network.

Bertram Street (Leon to Cawston), Active Transportation Corridor (ATC) Construction will continue in spring 2026 on this segment of the Bertram ATC, delivering a two‑way protected bike lane, widened sidewalks and safer intersections to create a more comfortable, connected downtown. This project will tie the new bridge over Hwy 97 to the UBCO campus under construction.

Burtch Road Improvements (Highway 97 to Glenmore Rd.) Construction is planned to start this spring and will add new travel lanes, sidewalks, lighting, multi‑use paths, bike lanes, utility upgrades and intersection improvements to make the corridor safer, more connected and easier to get around. This project will also improve access to the new Parkinson Recreation Centre.

Transit Exchange Improvements Work will begin this spring on improvements at the Mission Recreation and Okanagan College transit exchanges. Both projects will deliver improved safety, comfort and connections for transit users through the addition of new bus bays, shelters, bicycle lockers, and upgraded sidewalks, pickup and drop‑off areas. Connections to nearby active transportation networks will also be improved, making it easier for people to reach transit.

This year’s transportation investments also include maintaining and improving infrastructure, including crosswalk safety upgrades, bicycle network improvements, intersection improvements including new signals, neighbourhood street urbanization, road renewal and traffic calming initiatives.

These investments help maintain and prolong existing infrastructure, prevent larger future costs and keep our community connected and moving safely.
