Next month, work is expected to begin on two projects that support the 2040 Transportation Master Plan (TMP) aim of a continuous north–south corridor linking Glenmore Road and KLO Road.

The projects will ease pressure on key routes, shorten commute times, and offer residents more travel choices as the city grows. Both are anticipated to be completed in 2027. Construction on the Burtch Road extension is anticipated to start mid-March. The long-standing road connection went through design and planning engagement with residents and environmental partners in 2025. The project will deliver a new 1.6‑kilometre section between Denver Road and KLO Road and will feature two travel lanes, protected bike lanes, sidewalks, street trees, a new crosswalk to improve access to Munson Pond trail, new left-turn lanes, intersection and roundabout improvements and a new traffic signal at Burtch and KLO, all while protecting the natural area through various mitigation efforts.

Construction is anticipated to start in late March on various road improvements along Burtch Rd. from Highway 97 to Bernard Avenue as well as improvements on Bernard Ave. between Burtch Road and Glenmore Rd. in conjunction with the Redeveloped Parkinson Recreation Centre. Highlights include widening Burtch Road and Bernard Avenue to four lanes, the addition of an advanced left-turn signal from Burtch Road onto Highway 97, safety and capacity improvements, transit stop upgrades, an active transportation corridor on Burtch Road and several other intersection improvements, including extended left turning lanes, improved right turns and new signals.

Commuters can expect temporary construction‑related impacts during the project durations; however, once complete, these improvements will strengthen the transportation network, support active transportation, reduce congestion and support faster, more reliable travel times across the core area.

Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians are encouraged to plan ahead, follow traffic control personnel and posted signage, and travel with caution through active construction areas.
