Improvements to the Okanagan College Transit Exchange starting soon
Upgrades to the Okanagan College Exchange will begin this week, improving connections for students and residents travelling throughout the greater Kelowna area. Once complete, the improvements will provide safer, easier access to local businesses, restaurants, shopping centres, entertainment venues, and employment opportunities.
Improvements to the Okanagan College Exchange are designed to support growing student enrollment and future service increases. Work includes:
- Expansion of the existing bay and passenger areas;
- Two new bus shelters with bench seating to protect riders from weather elements;
- Enhancements to traffic operations on campus to improve bus movement and safety;
- Relocation of services to the primary exchange area on K.L.O. Rd., eliminating the need for buses to stop within the campus entrance way;
- Bicycle parking; and
- Wayfinding signage to assist pedestrians, cyclists and transit customers in and around the exchange.
The upgrades will complement the Casorso Active Transportation Corridor (ATC) extension, which will connect to the Okanagan College Exchange on K.L.O. Road.
Some construction impacts are to be expected. Please abide by safety personnel instructions, posted construction signage and fencing to ensure everyone’s safety while commuting through the area and visiting nearby destinations. The City of Kelowna and onsite crews appreciate your patience during construction and apologize in advance for any inconvenience. The project is expected to be completed this October.
The Okanagan College Exchange is part of the broader Kelowna Exchanges program developed in partnership between BC Transit and the City of Kelowna. Funding partners for the exchange program, budgeted at up to $16.5 million, include the Government of Canada through the Public Transit Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, the Province of British Columbia, and the City of Kelowna. These investments provide significant transit upgrades that will support the city in delivering safe, efficient, and reliable transit services in the future. Other exchanges included in this program are the Rutland Transit Exchange, where upgrades have been completed, and the Mission Recreation Exchange, where work is underway and expected to be complete this fall.
