K.L.O. Road Bridge Replacement at Mission Creek

Home > Our community > Planning & projects > Current capital projects > K.L.O. Road Bridge Replacement at Mission Creek

Project overview
The City of Kelowna is replacing the K.L.O. bridge and improving the surrounding area. Built in 1949, the K.L.O. Bridge is nearing the end of its service life. While the structure is still safe for travellers, replacement is needed due to aging infrastructure, its low-grade bridge height, in-stream concrete piers, limited pedestrian and cycling facilities, safety concerns at the Mission Greenway trail crossing and the challenging intersection at Spiers Road and K.L.O. Road.

The installation of a roundabout on the East side of K.L.O. bridge will help improve traffic flow, increase intersection safety and support active transportation options ensuring a safe and reliable connection to Southeast Kelowna.

Timeline
In collaboration with FortisBC, early works construction began in the summer of 2024. Focusing on upgrading a transmission gas pipeline beneath K.L.O. Road near Spiers Road. Subsequent electricity infrastructure upgrades, involved the relocation and installation of a new distribution line and poles along the same roads to accommodate the future bridge replacement project. Construction on the bridge and roundabout improvements began in spring 2025 and is projected to be complete by Fall 2026.

Funding
The $23 million project is funded in partnership by the City of Kelowna, the Government of Canada through the Canada Community Building Fund administered by UBCM and the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund, and the Province of British Columbia through the Active Transportation Infrastructure Grants Program.
