Vehicle traffic to shift onto new K.L.O. Bridge in May
News Release
The new K.L.O. Bridge is nearing completion and will officially open to traffic this May, marking a major milestone in the K.L.O. Bridge and Roundabout Improvements Project and another step toward building safe, reliable infrastructure for Kelowna’s growing community.
While the new bridge will open in May, construction will continue on the south side of the project area. Work remains on the roundabout, pathways and final site restoration. Construction is on track to be fully complete by fall 2026.
Once fully complete, the project will improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, increase intersection safety at Spiers Road and K.L.O. Road, and provide safer travel options for people driving, walking and cycling in Southeast Kelowna.
The new 35-metre clear-span bridge is built at a higher elevation to safely accommodate flood flows in Mission Creek. Removing in-stream concrete piers improves waterway health and allows for safer passage for users of the Mission Creek Greenway underneath the bridge.
Replacing the 1949 bridge advances Kelowna City Council priorities by improving transportation safety, strengthening climate and flood resilience, and supporting active and sustainable travel as the city continues to grow. Improved sightlines for drivers, traffic calming measures, and expanded walking and cycling options will enhance road safety, support economic access, and ensure critical infrastructure keeps pace with Kelowna’s growth.
The $23 million project is funded in partnership by the City of Kelowna, the Government of Canada through the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund, and the Community stream of the Build Communities Strong Fund (formerly the Canada Community Building Fund) administered by UBCM and the Province of British Columbia through the Active Transportation Infrastructure Grants Program.
