Street closures downtown & lower Mission this weekend for Apple Marathon
Traffic Advisory
The Kelowna Marathon returns this fall on Sunday, September 28. To ensure the safety of participants, spectators and volunteers, traffic patterns will be temporarily altered between approximately 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. More information about the event can be found at appleraceseries.com.
While the race route will largely use waterfront pathways and bike paths, traffic impacts downtown, in the North End and along Abbott Street to Gyro Beach are expected. Residents are asked to plan ahead by choosing alternate routes and/or allowing for extra time for travel in case of delays.
Traffic Impacts
To accommodate the race, a large number of road closures and impacts will be in effect across the city. View all traffic impacts at appleraceseries.com/traffic-impact.
Traffic control personnel will be visible to direct traffic. Motorists are advised to plan their routes accordingly to avoid delays.
City Park and Parking Impacts
The Lakefront Promenade between City Park and Waterfront Park will be in use September 28 from approximately 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. City Park remains open to the public during the event.
City Park’s parking lot will be closed from on Sept 28 from 6 a.m. until approximately 11 a.m. with limited public parking from Thursday, Sept. 25 to Monday, Sept 29. to accommodate the event.
Transit Impacts
To accommodate road closures, several transit impacts are also expected:
- Route 1: Lakeshore – Riders should expect delays and plan additional time into their travels.
- Route 2: North End – Bus stops Water at Doyle (#102865) and Water at Cawston (#102870) will be closed. A detour will be in place within downtown, skipping Water Street from Queensway to Ellis Street. Schedule delays are expected throughout the route’s northern segment which operates on Ellis Street and Richter Street. These corridors are part of the race route.
- Route 8: University – Potential schedule delays due to the race segment along Pandosy Street and KLO Road.
Stop Closures
- Water at Doyle (#102865) Queensway Exchange_Bay E (#102859) is the alternate boarding option (300 meters south)
- Water at Cawston (#102870) Queensway Exchange_Bay E (#102859) is the alternate boarding option (600 meters south)
- Lakeshore at Cedar – South Bound (#102999) for Route 1 Lakeshore at Swordy St (#103062) is the alternate boarding option (800 meters south)
- Lakeshore by Siesta Suites – South Bound (#103025) for Route 1 Lakeshore at Swordy St (#103062) is the alternate boarding option (600 meters south)
- KLO at Casorso (#103020) for Routes 1 Lakeshore and 8 University. Riders will need to cross the road and walk to Okanagan College Exchange (Bay A and Bay B) to board these routes (400 meters)
- Pandosy at Groves (#102982) Riders will need to board Route 1 or 8 on Pandosy-Raymer (200 meters north)
Several bus stops will be closed or temporarily relocated. Riders should give themselves extra time and plan their route at bctransit.com/kelowna.
