Rutland Road South closure for roundabout construction
Traffic Advisory
Beginning Tuesday, March 10, Rutland Road South will be closed between Gemini Road and Springfield Road to allow for construction of a new roundabout. The closure is expected to remain in place until early June. Commuters are encouraged to use Highway 33, Gerstmar Road or Hollywood Road as alternate routes when possible and follow posted signage. A local traffic detour will also be available via Belgo Road.
Springfield Road will remain open; however, delays in the area are expected.
The new roundabout will improve traffic flow and safety for all road users, while increasing capacity to support Kelowna’s growing community. As part of the project, the neighbourhood will benefit from upgrades including new lighting, pedestrian crossings, bike lanes, minor bus stop improvements and improved stormwater infrastructure.
To support these improvements, the Neptune Road crosswalk signal will be replaced with new pedestrian crossings within the roundabout, reducing the number of road crossings and improving traffic flow. Westbound traffic from Neptune Road will be accommodated via the new roundabout, and access to Neptune Road will remain unchanged. The westbound transit stop on Springfield Road west of Neptune Road will be relocated to Rutland Road at Gemini Road to improve stop spacing and transit efficiency.
Roundabouts make it safer and easier for everyone to get around. They significantly reduce the number of severe collisions by slowing traffic and eliminating dangerous conflict points. They can also improve traffic flow and delays by reducing the time drivers are stopped waiting for traffic lights.
Roundabouts support active transportation with features like bike lanes, multi-use paths, and pedestrian crossings. They’re also better for the environment, helping to lower emissions and fuel use by reducing idling and stop-and-go traffic. Over time, roundabouts cost less to maintain than signalized intersections and offer opportunities to enhance neighbourhood character through landscaping and placemaking. As part of broader infrastructure upgrades, they help build a more connected, resilient and livable city.
Please abide by safety personnel instructions, posted construction signage and fencing to ensure everyone’s safety while commuting through the area.
The City of Kelowna and onsite crews appreciate your patience during construction and apologize in advance for any inconvenience.
