Low water levels impacting Okanagan Lake boat launches
Public Service Announcement
The City of Kelowna is advising boaters to think ahead when launching and retrieving watercraft. Drought conditions have created safety concerns and increased the risk of damage to vessels, trailers and vehicles when using some boat launches.
“Current lake conditions are impacting boat launch access throughout the region, reducing the depth of water that some vessels need to launch and placing increased pressure on the launches” said Bradely Steele, Design Technician “These conditions are subject to change and signage is being placed to advise users.”
The City is working with the province of British Columbia to pursue mitigating measures to improve the functionality of the Cook Road Boat Launch.
Boaters are advised that expected declines in lake levels throughout the summer are expected to further impact boat launch operations.
Boaters should also be aware that functionality at Cedar Creek Boat Launch and Sutherland Bay Boat Launch are already significantly compromised due to low water conditions, which may increase demand at Water Street Boat Launch.
The City continues to advance plans for the Cook Boat Launch Replacement Project, and is working with provincial and federal authorities for permits to replace and expand the existing launch, constructing a sediment control groyne, a public pier, and enhancing fish habitat through environmental restoration measures.
The project is designed to reduce ongoing sand infilling, improve long-term access for boaters, minimize the need for future dredging and enhance environmental conditions along the shoreline. While permit delays have affected project timelines, the City is currently working toward a winter construction start with anticipated completion in spring 2027.
Lake levels and boat launch conditions can change quickly, particularly during periods of drought. The City will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates throughout the summer as necessary.
