Highlights of February 9 Council meeting
News Release
RCMP Year in Review
Council received the RCMP Year in Review report, which outlines public safety and crime data for the past year. Highlights include an 18 per cent decline in property offences between 2022 and 2025, with reductions in auto theft, break and enter, and fraud. The report also notes a 15 per cent increase in mischief. In response, RCMP has increased foot patrols in areas throughout the city to strengthen visibility, support early intervention and enhance community presence.
Short-term rental amendments
Council considered updates to the Zoning Bylaw that would create a new short-term rental accommodations subzone and allow short-term rentals as a principal use on properties within that subzone. The bylaw will return to Council for consideration of final adoption once the required review by the Ministry of Transportation and Transit is complete, and after the Ministry of Housing and Municipal Affairs has made a decision regarding an exemption under the Short Term Rental Accommodation Act. The City continues to advocate to the Province for an expedited exemption timeline.
