Stuart Park has a fresh look this holiday season with a new 40-foot Christmas tree adorned with 1,142 ornaments in red, gold and green. Its advanced light system casts a festive glow over the ice rink, creating a picture-perfect backdrop for winter fun. Find rink hours and details here: Stuart Park | City of Kelowna

Many memories were made beneath the old tree but when it reached the end of their lifespan, it became an opportunity to bring in a bigger, brighter, more beautiful tree for all to enjoy.

“Recreation spaces like Stuart Park help bring people together,” said Stephen Hebden, Recreation Facility Operations Supervisor. “Whether it’s families skating or friends gathering by the tree, these places create opportunities for connection and a sense of belonging.”

The tree is one of two purchased this year from Canadian company Classic Displays, with its twin shining in Rutland Centennial Park. Together, they came in under Council’s approved $300,000 budget at $256,000 for the pair.

Bringing this winter wonderland to life takes weeks of preparation. Crews start by pressure washing the concrete pad, installing fencing and rubber matting, and activating the ice plant to chill the surface. Thin layers of water are then slowly added, this process that can take up to 10 days to complete depending on weather, before finishing touches like curling rings are added for extra fun.

“It takes at least two people and several nights to bring the ice to the right thickness so it’s safe for the public,” adds Hebden. “Once the rink opens, we resurface it daily and do deep maintenance weekly.”

Since debuting in 2010, Stuart Park ice rink has become one of Kelowna’s most beloved winter attractions. In 2015, Stuart Park was named Canada’s Greatest Public Space by the Canadian Institute of Planners, thanks in part to its seasonal transformation into an outdoor rink. Today, the rink and tree define Kelowna’s holiday experience, blending tradition with innovation and creating a space were community spirit shines bright in the darkest months of the year.
