More than 260 change-makers from across the region gathered in Kelowna earlier this month for the Inspired City Summit, bringing together people from 153 organizations representing 23 cities.
The annual event continues to play an important role in strengthening the non-profit and community-building sector by creating a time and space for connection, learning and collaboration.
The 266 attendees represented a range of organizations, from grassroots, volunteer-run groups to larger teams, all coming together with a shared goal of better serving their communities. Many participants said the opportunity to connect with others working in the sector was a key draw, whether to explore future collaborations, exchange resources or find mentorship and support.

“One of the best conferences I’ve been to,” said one participant. “There was such good conversation and great information in each session.”
Throughout the day, sessions covered topics ranging from board governance and website optimization to ethical storytelling and building stronger collaborations within the non-profit sector. Each reinforced a shared commitment to continuous improvement and thoughtful community service.
“As an organizer, it’s incredibly energizing to see such a diverse mix of organizations come together for this rare opportunity for everyone to learn from one another,” said Sara Thirnbeck, Community Development Coordinator. “When people fill a space on a Saturday eager to connect, share and grow, it speaks volumes about the passion and dedication within this community.”
This year’s keynote speaker, Likky Lavji, invited participants to reflect on their own leadership styles and consider how blind spots in communication and team dynamics can affect collaboration. His keynote presentation encouraged deeper self-awareness and offered practical insights into becoming more effective, inclusive leaders.
“The way he unpacked emotional and cognitive blind spots hit in a real way and gave us a lot to sit with, both personally and in our work,” said another participant.
Following the keynote address, participants moved into breakout sessions focused on governance, leadership and management best practices. Speakers were generous in sharing tools and resources, including governance workbooks, financial toolkits and event frameworks that attendees could take back to their organizations.

The day wrapped up with collaborative sessions designed to spark conversation and knowledge-sharing between attendees. On average, participants made six to 10 new connections, further reinforcing the collaboration and openness within the sector. A new pre-summit Social Summit networking event also helped build meaningful connections before the day officially began.
The City of Kelowna extends thanks to the event’s sponsors, Dante Group, Valley First, a division of First West Credit Union, Central Okanagan Foundation, and MNP for their ongoing support of the Inspired City Summit.
