City of Kelowna supports Media Literacy Week, unveils new digital newsletter

October 27, 2025

News Release

The City of Kelowna is proud to announce its participation in MediaSmarts’ Media Literacy Week, a national initiative promoting critical thinking and informed engagement with digital media. As part of this effort, the City is launching a new email newsletter titled “Technology & Digital Solutions,” designed to connect people with updates on the City’s changing digital landscape.

Media Literacy Week, running from Oct. 27 to Nov. 1, encourages Canadians of all ages to become more informed and engaged digital citizens. The City of Kelowna is joining this movement by spotlighting its ongoing commitment to digital literacy, innovation and transparent communication. Four easy ways to tell if something is true online are to use fact-checking tools (like the one on the MediaSmarts website), find the source, verify the source and check other sources.

“Media Literacy Week is a powerful reminder that digital citizenship starts with curiosity and critical thinking,” said Andreas Boehm, Intelligent Cities Manager. “At the City of Kelowna, we’re committed to helping residents navigate the digital world with confidence.”

Launching in November, the “Technology & Digital Solutions” newsletter is a new initiative from the City’s Intelligent Cities branch. This digital publication is tailored for those who want to stay informed about the City’s latest digital services, innovation projects and opportunities to participate in user testing and feedback. Residents can receive the first newsletter directly in their inbox in early November by signing up now at kelowna.ca/notifications.

“This newsletter is a way to share what’s happening behind the scenes and invite the community to help shape the future of digital services in Kelowna,” said Andreas Boehm, Intelligent Cities Manager. “The newsletter supports the City’s digital transformation priorities and fosters a digitally confident, engaged community.”

Throughout Media Literacy Week, the City will share resources and tips on social media about identifying misinformation, understanding digital tools and staying safe online. These efforts align with national goals to empower citizens in today’s complex media landscape, where you can’t always trust what you see.
