The spring sweep is back on Kelowna streets Sunday
News Release
Following an early start thanks to favourable weather, the City’s annual street sweeping program officially begins Sunday, March 15, following a pre-sweep of downtown, priority bike lanes and arterial roads. Crews will be working seven days a week, up to 20 hours a day, with the spring sweep expected to be completed by mid-May, weather permitting.
“This is a significant, citywide operation,” says Andrew Schwerdtfeger, Roadways Operations Manager. “Crews will sweep more than 2,100 lane kilometres of roadways, as well as 390 kilometres of bike lanes, 440 kilometres of sidewalks, over 35,000 square metres of medians, and 52 municipal parking lots.”
Work is completed in sections, and residents can follow weekly progress and route priorities at kelowna.ca/roadsweeping. Residents are encouraged to support sweeping efforts by removing vehicles from streets and clearing obstacles such as portable basketball hoops. Sweeping loose sand from sidewalks and boulevards into the gutter can also help crews achieve a more thorough clean.
“By removing dirt, grit, and pollutants before they enter storm drains and local waterways, street sweeping helps protect the environment, maintain cleaner streets, and enhance quality of life across the city,” Schwerdtfeger continues.
Temporary no-parking signage will be installed at least 24 hours before sweeping begins in a neighbourhood. In some cases, signs may remain in place longer due to weather-related delays.
