Lithium-ion battery precautions to keep your home safe

January 9, 2026

As the holiday season wraps up, some people may have found themselves unwrapping new cordless power tools, e-bikes, electric scooters, tablets, phones, and a growing range of battery powered devices. As these gifts bring joy and convenience, the Kelowna Fire Department is reminding the public to use and charge lithium-ion batteries safely.

“Lithium-ion batteries are in more products than ever, and while they’re safe when used properly, they can be extremely dangerous if damaged or charged incorrectly. A few simple precautions can prevent serious fires and protect your home,” said Dennis Craig, Assistant Fire Chief, Mitigation & Prevention.

To keep your home and family safe:

  • Use only certified chargers and equipment, preferably the charger that came with the device.
  • Charge devices in open areas, away from exits and never on soft surfaces like beds or couches.
  • Avoid overcharging and unplug devices once charging is complete.
  • Remove e-cigarette batteries before storing the device in pockets or bags.
  • Recycle used or damaged lithium-ion batteries properly, never throw them in household garbage, where they pose a fire risk.

Inspect batteries regularly and stop using them if you notice:

  • Odour
  • Swelling or changes in shape
  • Discolouration
  • Excess heat
  • Leaking
  • Unusual noise
