Heat alert comes to an end

July 17, 2026

News Release

Environment and Climate Change Canada has ended the Yellow Heat Alert for the Central Okanagan, including Kelowna, prompting the City to transition out of elevated heat response measures and return to normal operations.

During the alert, the City supported public heat safety communications, coordinated with community partners, promoted available cool spaces, and implemented response measures based on the alert level and operational capacity.

While the alert has ended, residents are reminded that summer heat remains a seasonal risk. The City will continue to monitor weather conditions and maintain readiness should future heat alerts be issued.

Residents looking to stay cool throughout the summer can:

  • Visit public facilities such as recreation centres, activity centres, and libraries during regular operating hours.
  • Spend time in shaded parks and green spaces.
  • Cool off at one of Kelowna's water parks.
  • Review the PreparedBC Extreme Heat Preparedness Guide for tips and resources to stay safe during hot weather.

Many Kelowna parks and green spaces offer shade where temperatures can be lower than homes without air conditioning. View the Parks & Beaches map to find parks near you or visit one of three waterparks to help stay cool.
