City breaks ground on new Activity Centre in Rutland
News Release
The City of Kelowna has officially broken ground on the new Activity Centre in Rutland, marking an exciting milestone for a centre that will serve as a welcoming beacon in the park — bringing light, warmth and activity to the neighbourhood while creating generous social spaces where people can gather, connect and spend time together.
The new centre will bring much needed recreation, wellness, and community gathering space to Rutland, supporting residents of all ages and strengthening the area’s role as a vibrant urban hub through the Building a Stronger Kelowna initiative.
Located in the heart of Rutland, the facility will feature a modern gymnasium, multi‑purpose program rooms that open directly into the park spaces, enhanced teaching kitchen, a dedicated youth zone, and flexible spaces designed to support everything from youth activities to seniors’ programming.
“Rutland has a strong and connected community, and this new Activity Centre at Lions Park will give residents a place to come together, stay active, and build those connections even further. This investment of more than $20 million reflects our focus on delivering the spaces and services people rely on every day,” says Mayor Tom Dyas. “It will also help increase safety in the community by creating a welcoming, active hub that supports positive use of the park and surrounding area. As Kelowna continues to grow, this project ensures families, youth, and seniors in Rutland have access to high quality recreation and community programming close to home, now and into the future.”
The new Activity Centre is designed to work seamlessly with Lions Park, creating spaces where indoor and outdoor activities can blend naturally and community events can draw energy from both areas. Inside, features like the second‑floor gathering spaces and the enhanced teaching kitchen will offer beautiful views, practical amenities, and a place for people to cook, connect, and celebrate together.
The project reflects extensive community engagement and long-term‑ planning through the City’s Building a Stronger Kelowna initiative. Residents identified the need for more indoor recreation space, particularly in Rutland, where population growth has outpaced available facilities. The new centre will help meet that demand while supporting broader goals for accessibility, sustainability, and community resilience.
Construction will continue through 2027, with the facility designed to meet high environmental performance standards. Energy efficient systems, natural lighting, and durable materials will reduce long-term operating costs and support the City’s climate goals. The building’s flexible layout will also allow it to adapt to future community needs.
Once complete, the Activity Centre will serve as a neighbourhood anchor, offering recreation programs, cultural activities, community events, and drop-in‑ opportunities that bring people together. This project reflects the City’s commitment to delivering high-quality recreation infrastructure that supports residents today and in the future.
