Calling all artists: applications now open for Rutland Transit Exchange mural project
News Release
“The City of Kelowna is committed to fostering a rich and vibrant creative sector,” said Christine McWillis, Cultural Services Manager for the City of Kelowna. “We want our city to be a place where creativity pops up everywhere you go and is accessible, inspiring, and truly part of everyday life for residents and visitors.”
Following recent upgrades to the Transit Exchange at Shephard and Asher Road, the City is seeking an artist to create a six-panel mural installation highlighting Rutland’s unique character and agricultural legacy, community gatherings and the evolution to a vibrant, diverse urban neighbourhood.
“Art projects like this really bring a space to life and make it feel warm, welcoming, and connected to the people who live here,” said Sara Thirnbeck, Community Development Coordinator. “Rutland already has so many amazing murals, this one is going to further add to that landscape and celebrate the neighbourhood’s unique history and character.”
The project aspires to highlight the neighbourhood’s unique identity and enhance this active and highly visible space.
"Transit exchanges are places that people move through every day, and projects like this help make that experience more welcoming and reflective of the community.” said Katie Sherwood, Transit Infrastructure Coordinator. “We’re excited to see local artists help shape a space that many residents rely on daily."
Okanagan artists, both professional and emerging, who are interested in leaving their mark on the neighbourhood are encouraged to apply online until June 8. Work will take place between July and August and the selected artist will receive $5500 plus applicable GST.
