As National Child Day approaches on Thursday, Nov. 20, Kelowna is shining a spotlight on its ongoing mission to create a city where every child and youth feels safe, connected, and supported.

The City’s approach to healthy communities is rooted in the belief that promoting child and youth wellbeing is a shared responsibility — one that spans families, neighbourhoods, and municipal leadership. This year, the theme of “Community Vibrancy” takes centre stage, reflecting Kelowna’s dedication to building a vibrant, inclusive, and thriving community for all.

Four Pillars of Wellbeing

Drawing inspiration from the BC Healthy Communities framework, Kelowna’s strategy focuses on four protective factors that strengthen mental wellness and resilience in young people: Participation, Play, Safety, and Social Connection and Belonging. These pillars guide the City’s programs, spaces, and services, fostering connection, creativity, and opportunity.

Participation: Youth Voices Shaping the City

Kelowna recognizes the importance of giving children and youth a voice in shaping their community. Initiatives like the STEM: Climate in Action workshop, supported by the City’s Youth Development and Engagement Grant, bring together students to explore science and sustainability through hands-on activities. These events spark curiosity, collaboration, and a sense of belonging across age groups.

The Building Stronger Kelowna initiative also exemplifies this commitment. By conducting workshops with young adults aged 18-24, the City ensures that new community hubs and youth lounges are designed with direct input from those who will use them. This participatory approach meets the needs of young residents and empowers them to take ownership of their spaces.

Safety: Empowering Youth for a Secure Future

Physical, emotional, and cultural safety are foundational to healthy communities. The Kelowna Youth Safety Committee (KYSC), a youth-led group, collaborates with local authorities to address safety issues and ensure youth perspectives are heard.

In response to rising online risks, the City’s Community Safety Services Branch partners with RCMP School Resource Officers to deliver digital safety presentations, equipping over 300 children and families with the tools to navigate today’s digital landscape confidently.

Play: Spaces for Creativity and Exploration

Kelowna’s commitment to play is evident in its support for playful spaces and creative opportunities. Monthly Youth Nights at the Parkinson Recreation Centre offer a safe, welcoming environment for teens to socialize, be active, and have fun.

Tallgrass Park’s Playbox project, filled with games and sports equipment, encourages outdoor activity and community connection, eliminating barriers to participation.

Social Connection and Belonging: Fostering Inclusion

Inclusion and connection are vital for mental wellbeing. The Park & Play program, held in neighborhood parks throughout the summer, brings families together for outdoor activities, strengthening neighborhood ties and fostering a sense of belonging.

Residents are also encouraged to apply for Strong Neighbourhood Grants to fund events and projects that connect neighbors and enhance community spaces.

Community Vibrancy: Economic Vitality and Belonging

Kelowna’s vision for community vibrancy extends beyond youth programs. The City invests in arts, recreation, and heritage initiatives, supports local businesses and tourism, and provides housing and social services for vulnerable populations. These efforts reflect a holistic commitment to economic vitality and belonging for all residents.

A Shared Responsibility

Every City department plays a role in nurturing these protective factors — whether by improving public spaces, supporting family-friendly events, engaging youth voices, or celebrating inclusion. By working together, Kelowna is strengthening the foundation for lifelong wellness and building a city where every child truly thrives.
