Central Okanagan Foundation Volunteer Organization of the Year Award
2024 Central Okanagan Foundation's Volunteer Organization of the Year Recipient
Special Olympics Kelowna
Special Olympics Kelowna enriches the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities through sports, supported by over 200 volunteers. They provide year-round training and competition for over 150 athletes, fostering inclusion, health, and empowerment. Their commitment to athletes and community collaboration makes them a strong nominee for the Volunteer Organization of the Year award.
In 2024, they achieved significant milestones, including over 30 athletes qualifying for the Provincial Games and launching a Unified Sports program. They increased participation by 15% through outreach and recruited 50 new volunteers. They also secured sponsorships and hosted a volunteer appreciation event, highlighting their community impact. Additionally, the Motionball Kelowna fundraisers have now donated well over $1,000,000 locally.
Beyond sports, Special Olympics Kelowna has successfully raised substantial funds and increased community engagement through events like the 4th student-run Marathon of Sport with UBCO, walk-a-thon, Polar Plunge, and Trivia Nights. Their dedication to recognizing and appreciating volunteers has maintained a strong and committed volunteer base. Through their unwavering commitment to inclusivity, community spirit, and athlete support, Special Olympics Kelowna has profoundly impacted the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families, making them a deserving candidate for the Volunteer Organization of the Year award.
The recipient of this award will receive a $3,000 donation from Central Okanagan Foundation.
