Chute Lake Road roundabout opens to improve connectivity in Southwest Mission
News Release
The newly constructed roundabout on Chute Lake Road opened to traffic Tuesday evening, marking a significant milestone in the City of Kelowna’s commitment to building a connected and growth-ready city. Final touches on the Frost Road extension are still underway and are anticipated to be complete by the end of October.
“Kelowna is one of the fastest growing cities in Canada, and we’re planning for that growth with smart infrastructure investments that make it easier and safer for residents to get around,” said Mayor Tom Dyas. “The Chute Lake Road roundabout and Frost Road extension improve neighbourhood connectivity, reduce congestion, and enhance traffic safety by improving traffic flow and reducing collision risks for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.”
The roundabout is part of a $7.8 million investment in the Southwest Mission neighbourhood that includes the extension of Frost Road from Killdeer Road to Chute Lake Road. This new connection enhances access to Gordon Drive and South Perimeter Way, improving travel routes for residents, students, visitors and future commercial services in the Ponds neighbourhood.
The project provides improved access, expanded transportation options, upgraded sidewalks and bike lanes, and will reduce congestion on nearby streets. It also includes new street lighting and significant upgrades to water, storm and sanitary utilities, supporting long-term infrastructure needs for future growth.
Roundabouts make it safer and easier for everyone to get around. They significantly reduce the number of severe collisions by slowing traffic and eliminating dangerous conflict points. They can also improve traffic flow and delays by reducing the time drivers are stopped waiting for traffic lights.
This project is part of the City’s broader strategy to manage growth through strategic land use and infrastructure investment. Ensuring Kelowna remains a vibrant, connected and sustainable community. The Frost Road extension marks the first completed initiative under the Transportation Accelerator Program (TAP), a strategic effort to fast-track the delivery of key transportation projects. TAP strengthens Kelowna’s transportation network by expanding mobility options, improving safety, and supporting future-ready neighbourhoods.
