Public skating 2020

This year, to adhere to safety measures amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, public skating times can be pre-booked through our online reservation system. Bookings can placed up to two hours prior to your desired skate time. Please note that you will need an online City recreation account to book a skate time. To set up an account, call 250-469-8800 or email recreation@kelowna.ca. Drop-ins will be permitted only if space allows. Please note that all drop-in skaters also require an online City recreation account.

Online pre-booking: reserve a time slot for public skating

The online booking system is being introuduced to ensure that even during peak times, the number of skaters at any given rink will be monitored and capped to allow for physical distancing. See below for safety guidelines and frequently asked questions. Skate Rentals

Skate rentals are currently unavailable at all facilities. Check back for updates.

Fees

The fee for a one-hour time slot at any public skating facility is $3 per person. All fees are collected at the time of online booking. Drop-in skaters can pay their fees upon arrival to their skating facility. Debit, MasterCard and VISA are currently only accepted at Rutland Arena. All other facilties require payments in cash and exact change is stongly encouraged.

  • Rutland Arena: 645 Dodd Road
  • Memorial Arena: 1424 Ellis Street - Skating at Memorial Arena does not begin until later this season. Skaters can access Prospera Arena in the meantime.
  • Prospera Arena: 1223 Water Street - Prospera Arena is only open for public skating until Memorial Arena opens later in the season

Why do I need to reserve a time slot for public skating?

The online reservation system is in place so skaters can be assured that even during peak times, the number of people in any given facility will be monitored and capped to allow for physical distancing. 

I'm having trouble using the online booking tool. Is there another way to reserve a time slot?

If you have any issues using the online reservation system, you can connect with one of our recreation clerks using LiveChat (click on the chat icon in the bottom right corner of your screen on our recreation webpage) or by calling 250-469-8800. Current LiveChat and phone hours are Mon-Fri, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m., Sat-Sun, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Can I change or cancel my online reservation?

No, you cannot change or cancel your online skating reservation. All drop-ins are non-refundable.  

What COVID-19 precautions are in place at public skating facilities?
  • All high touch areas in all facilities will be frequently cleaned and sanitized. 
  • Skaters are encouraged to come dressed for the rink as facilities may not have changerooms available. Skates can be laced up in designated areas, but skaters should note that all facilities will have physical distancing protocols in place and space will be limited. 
  • Enter and exit doors will be clearly marked. 
  • Facility capacities have been lowered and will remain capped to ensure that even during peak times, physical distance between skaters can be maintained. 
  • Masks are required in common lobby areas at Capital News Centre and Prospera Place as part of their facility-specific guidelines. 
  • Ticket booths will have plexiglass barriers installed. 
  • No equipment rentals are available at any facility at this time. Skaters will need to bring their own skates and helmets. 
  • Floor markings and additional signage will be posted at each facility to remind visitors to maintain physical distance from others and to wash hands frequently. 
  • Anyone who is sick or experiencing symptoms is asked to stay home. 
Do I need to wear a mask?

Skaters are required to wear masks in the common areas/lobby at Capital News Centre and Prospera Place as part of their facility-specific guidelines. Masks are optional on the ice.

Will skating be available at Stuart Park this year?

Public skating at the Stuart Park Outdoor Skating Rink is currently under review for 2020. Due to safety measures related to the COVID-19 pandemic, planning is underway to determine if appropriate adaptations can be made to ensure the health & safety of skaters. More information will be posted here when it becomes available.

Can I register for all the fall public skate dates at once?

Pre-registration for all public skating dates is available for Parent & Tot Skate at Rutland Arena, Seniors Skate at Rutland Arena and Seniors Skate/Shall We Dance at Prospera Place. Registration is available online or by phone at 250-469-8800.
