Field of Crosses
2022-11-02 (All day) to 2022-11-11 (All day)

The Field of Crosses is a visual memorial installation of ~ 240 white crosses to commemorate the lives of Canadian Armed Forces personnel who lost their lives in the service of their country. This project creates a visual remembrance of the names inscribed on the Kelowna Cenotaph.

Students and future generations living in Kelowna will benefit from an understanding of the stories and the individuals behind the names on the Cenotaph. This information may help promote world peace by humanizing the statistics behind wars.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The Field of Crosses Project is an annual display of white crosses near the Cenotaph in The City Park, Kelowna. The installation memorializes soldiers from the Kelowna area who lost their lives fighting for our country. Approximately 240 crosses (based on the number of names currently on the Cenotaph) will be placed in the City Park from November 1st – 12th to signify the ultimate sacrifice so many made fighting for the freedoms we enjoy today. It will be an enhancement to the regularly scheduled ceremonies at the Cenotaph each November 11th.
The inspiration for displaying the crosses is based on a similar exhibit displayed each November in Calgary, Alberta, where over 3,000 crosses are installed each year at a park on Memorial Drive. The Royal Canadian Legion, the British Columbia Dragoons and local cadets, along with a large group of volunteers will have an opportunity to assist in this extensive undertaking, including research, readying the crosses, preparing the space the display will cover, erecting the crosses, taking down the crosses and storing the crosses for next year, as well as organizing the daily events that take place at the Field of Crosses.
The crosses will stand in military cemetery formation for the final 7 days of The Kelowna Poppy Fund Campaign as an annual visible reminder of those who gave up their lives. Each day a number of school children will be bussed to the exhibit and given an opportunity to walk among the crosses as well as to research information on specific individuals whose names appear on the crosses and cenotaph.
