Residents are invited to learn, ask questions and provide their priorities on preliminary designs for Burtch Road and Hollywood Road extensions via online survey before May 13 or at a drop-in information session on May 6.

Burtch Road and Hollywood Road extensions are crucial long-standing projects outlined in the 2040 Transportation Master Plan (TMP) , highlighted for early completion as part of Council’s priorities in the Transportation Accelerator Program (TAP) .

“Both projects accommodate increased traffic volumes while prioritizing public safety and balancing technical requirements with various community interests,” said Chad Williams, Senior Transportation Engineer. “These extensions will help support growth, improve connectivity and enhance the overall transportation network in the region.”

The Burtch Road extension will provide a new 1.6 km section of arterial road between Denver Road and K.L.O. Road. These works are being coordinated with required sanitary sewer infrastructure upgrades and will include street trees, protected bike lanes, sidewalks, and a crosswalk to access the Munson Pond trail network. It also includes left turn lanes and intersection improvements where needed, including a new traffic signal at K.L.O. and Burtch, increasing capacity at the existing Byrns Road roundabout.

The Hollywood Road extension will provide a new 2.1 km section of arterial road between John Hindle Drive to Sexsmith Road. This work includes new bike lanes, sidewalks where there are currently gaps connecting to UBCO, a new roundabout at the Academy Way intersection and a traffic signal at Lougheed intersection. This work is being coordinated with BC Transit planning for the future Kelowna Transit facility.

The City is dedicated to preserving the natural environment while addressing the priority infrastructure needs of our community. Required Environmental Assessments are being completed as part of the project, and the project is working to identify opportunities to provide enhancements to the space.

Approval was obtained through the Agricultural Land Commission to build through the Agricultural Land Reserve and both projects are being built within City road right-of-way.

Preliminary designs will be on display for residents to browse at the information session and online. Public input, along with technical and environmental analysis, financial considerations and supporting City plans and policies, will help inform designs for Burtch and Hollywood Road extensions.

Sanitary sewer infrastructure upgrades for Burtch Road are expected to begin in summer 2025, with construction for both road projects anticipated to start in fall of 2025.
