We all need a buddy in this world but K.J. Hanson has proven a very special buddy, now in his fourth year volunteering with the Special Olympics Curling Buddy program. He’s also taken time to volunteer with Special Olympic cross country skiing, as well as at track meets, swim meets, the Terry Fox Run and at the Special Olympics B.C. Provincial Winter Games in 2007.
At school, his enthusiasm stretches from the athletic department, where he’s involved in basketball, volleyball, tennis and badminton, to working with the resource room teacher and special education students. He volunteered to assist with score keeping for a blind group’s goal-ball tournament and ended up helping out all weekend. He’s also worked numerous sports camps through the Parkinson Rec Centre.
As president of the KSS student council and chairman of the dry grad council, he was a natural fit to represent his school on the District Student Council and Student Voice. He’s also taken part in leadership events such as Social Justice and Fight Injustice Together. All of this led him to be selected to the Olympic and Para-Olympic Youth Leadership Academy.
