Get active. Be healthy. Protect the region you love. i-go.
The goal of i-go is to encourage all of us who live in the Central Okanagan to get active, be healthy, and protect the region we love by incorporating active transportation into our daily routines. By walking, cycling, running, in-line skating, riding transit, or carpooling as a means to get to our most frequent destinations, we will be less reliant on our automobiles and the resulting benefits of better health, cleaner air, plus a healthier environment and community, will improve everybody’s quality of life.
In addition, i-go addresses one of the biggest concerns of residents in our region – traffic congestion! Over the past few years, traffic congestion has been identified by Kelowna residents as our number one concern, check out the results of the annual Citizens Survey.
i-go is promoted and supported by the Central Okanagan Regional District, Westbank First Nation, the City of Kelowna, and the public through the Transportation Demand Management Department (TDM). TDM is committed to reducing vehicle emissions, the demand for roadway space, and peak period automobile traffic by encouraging people to use environmentally friendly and healthy forms of transportation.
TDM is not focused on getting rid of motor vehicles altogether; instead, it focuses on reducing our reliance on the single occupant vehicle (SOV - vehicles carrying only one person) and encouraging people to use their vehicles less. We all need to become accountable for the treads we make in society and realize that consistently being reliant and dependent on our vehicles is detrimental to our lives and the lives of generations to come.
The great part about TDM is that it benefits everybody. As people use their motor vehicles less the health problems associated with lack of exercise will diminish, our air quality will improve, and the need for roads will decrease. This means we can breathe cleaner air, enjoy more green space, and improve our health. |
