smartTRIPS is a regional active transportation program supported by the Sustainable Transportation Partnership of the Central Okanagan (STPCO). The goal of smartTRIPS is to encourage all Central Okanagan residents to be healthy and active by reducing drive-alone trips. When we choose to bike, walk, ride transit, carpool or any other active transportation option, we benefit individually and as a community through improved health and well-being, cleaner air and a healthier environment. Together we can improve the quality of life for everyone in the Central Okanagan!
What is active transportation?
Active transportation refers to human-powered modes of travel, such as walking, cycling, skateboarding and rollerblading. Active transportation also includes taking transit and carpooling. These are important choices we can make in order to save money, get active, stay healthy and improve our local air quality.
Why this matters. Traditional transportation strategies meant building more infrastructure to address traffic problems, but these projects take up valuable land space, are expensive and are short-term solutions. When we choose active modes of transportation, we decrease our demand for roads and are able to use the resources for other priorities. Together, we can create healthier and more sustainable communities.
