Ogogrow

Ogogrow is a nutrient rich soil amendment and top dressing produced by composting a mixture of wood chips and biosolids. Safe, effective and environmentally friendly, it’s ideal for use in landscaping, orchards, vegetable gardens and potting soil.

Production

ogogrowBiosolids used in the creation of Ogogrow are derived from the wastewater treatment process. The name “biosolids” is given to the solid waste remaining once the wastewater treatment process has been completed; biosolids contain macronutrients and organic matter needed to replenish soil and retain moisture.

Dewatered biosolids arrive at the Ogogrow Production Facility from the city’s Wastewater Treatment Plants. The biosolids are then mixed with wood waste (wood chips or hog fuel) to create an environment where aerobic bacteria can flourish.

compost_tractor.jpgThe resulting mix is piled on an aerated floor where blowers distribute air around the material to promote effective decomposition. As aerobic bacteria move and multiply, the piles heat up and exceed 55 degrees Celsius for three days. The heat kills pathogens making the material safe to handle.

Rapid decomposition continues for 35 days at which time the compost is then repiled and allowed to continue composting for another 60 - 90 days. As the compost matures it gets darker and takes on an earthy smell.

Ogogrow is sold and distributed in bulk to local retail outlets, landscapers, orchardists and nurseries.

Ogogrow earned national stature when Kelowna won the Composting Council of Canada’s 2nd Annual Great Pumpkin Growing Contest in 2003. The 407 pound beauty grown at the Glenmore Landfill outweighed the second place finisher by 61 pounds!
