Be predictable; be safe
Being predictable is the key to cycling safety, as reflected in the 5 basic principles of cycling below (adapted from the BC Bike Sense Manual). Please refer to the Bike Sense Manual for more detailed safety information for cyclists of all skill levels. Please contact us for a copy of the Kelowna Pathway and Bicycle Network Map. The City of Kelowna Multi Use Pathways and Cycling videos, and the smartTRIPS Rules of the Road page also contains great tips for cyclists.
The five basic principles of cycling
-
Know and obey the rules of the road - cyclists have the same rights and duties as a motor vehicle.
-
Maintain your bicycle and ensure it is in good working order.
-
Be as visible as possible to others.
-
Learn the skills needed to control your bike.
-
Cycle in traffic safely and predictably.
More great safety tips
- Wear a properly-fitting, CSA, ANSI, ASTM, or Snell approved helmet. In BC, it’s the law, but more than that, it just makes sense to protect your head!
- Wear bright clothing during the day and reflective clothing at night to remain visible.
-
Use front and rear lights and reflectors so drivers can see you if you plan on riding in the dark.
-
Find a biking buddy if it is your first time so that they can guide you as you get comfortable and confident enough to do it on your own.
-
Plan to take the safest routes by using the City of Kelowna’s Pathway & Bicycle Network Map or Google Cycling, which will identify bicycle lanes, paths and routes in Kelowna.
-
Obey the rules of the road to help prevent collisions. Bikes are considered vehicles too! See the Rules of the Road section for more information.
-
Scan the road, be alert and ride defensively. You cannot assume that drivers see you, so make sure that they do.
