2012 Runway Overlay Project

Work has begun on Kelowna International Airport’s runway with 7300 feet of the airport’s runway currently receiving new surface paving treatments.

With safety being top priority at YLW, the airport conducts annual maintenance for filling cracks and potential holes in the runway; however, it has been 26 years since a complete rejuvenation has occurred. Allocation in the 2012 budget has made this an optimal time for the work to be done.

Schedule
June 4 to August 24, 2012 - Completed on time & on budget
Construction hours: 11 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., weather dependant

Impacts
The runway will be closed during construction hours
No commercial flights will be affected.

There are two staging areas for equipment - one at the north end and one at the south end of the property to the east of the runway.

Background
The last time the runway received this type of overhaul was in 1986. A runway expansion project took place in 2008 to extend the runway from 7300 to 8900 feet; however, a complete overlay of the runway was unable to occur during that project due to costs and resourcing.

Kelowna International Airport appreciates the patience and understanding of our residential neighbours while this project is completed and will make every effort to ensure it does not exceed the projected three month timeline. This page will continue to update the project's progress.
