Mill Creek - Stewart Centre Fire
In August, 2010, a fire destroyed a portion of Stewart Centre on Kirschner Road. As a result there has been concern over contamination of nearby Mill Creek.
Water used to extinguish the fire mixed with products stored by Univar Canada at the Stewart Centre. These products traveled through the storm water system and into Mill Creek.
With the emergency response over, the focus will now shift to the three R's - Recovery, Rehabilitation and Remediation. Site clean-up and creek monitoring is underway, plus a remediation plan is in the works in order to more fully restore the area.
Herbicides and pesticides, and to a lesser extent some petroleum-based compounds, have been detected in the water in Mill Creek; however, water quality is now very near to meeting applicable water quality guidelines and is expected to meet these soon.
In October 2010, staff presented an overview of storm water management and major fire response.
