2009Pledge-to-Pool-efile.jpgThe third week of November 2009 marked the second annual Carpool Week in the Central Okanagan (view Kelowna's proclamation).

Thanks to participation throughout the Okanagan, Carpool Week 2009 was a success. Beating out larger communities, such as Calgary and Edmonton, we reduced our “Total Trips” by 39,887, which is 14,212 more than our 2008 Carpool Week numbers. Way to go Okanagan!

A total of 127 people took the carpool.ca challenge, pledged to pool for Carpool Week 2009 and had a chance to experience the benefits of sharing their ride firsthand. Benefits poolers experience include:

  • lower travel costs,
  • reduced driving stress,
  • meeting new friends and
  • feeling good about greener living.

Interior Health Authority and the City of Kelowna saw the highest corporate participation, accounting for 33% of all Carpool Week pledges in the Okanagan.

There were five random draws throughout the Okanagan to determine the Pledge to Pool prize winners. Drum roll please… and the two winners of the 2009 Carpool Week “Pledge to Pool” contest in Kelowna are:

Mark Vere, from the City of Kelowna, who won an iPod nano.

Ted Spearin, from Interior Health Authority, who won a $50 Cineplex gift card.

i-go.ca would like to extend special thanks to Lesley Manders, who went above and beyond in supporting this campaign and running one of the Carpool Week onsite booths.

We understand that change is difficult and want to thank those who gave carpooling a try. To those that have incorporated carpooling and active transportation into their daily lives – we applaud you… keep up the good work, you are making a difference!
