Fire Prevention Week 

October 3 -9, 2010 

Fire Prevention Week takes place from October 3th to October 9th, 2010. Despite the fact that fewer fire losses are reported in Canada, on average eight Canadians die from fire every week. 

During this week, Kelowna Fire Department has teamed up with the National Fire Protection Association  and fire departments across the nation to raise awareness of the dangers of fire and educate the public on ways we can protect ourselves from fire. 

Smoke Alarms: A Sound You Can Live With^©

This year's theme, "Smoke Alarms: A Sound You Can Live With^©”, underscores the importance of installing and maintaining working fire alarms in your home. Statistics show that working smoke alarms cut the chance of dying in a fire nearly in half - but they must be working properly to do so. By taking a few minutes to install or maintain a fire alarm, you could save the life of a loved one in an emergency.

Smoke Alarm Maintenance:

• Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button, and make sure everyone in your home knows their sound.
• If an alarm “chirps,” warning the battery is low, replace the battery right away.
• Replace all smoke alarms, including alarms that use 10-year batteries and hard-wired alarms, when they’re 10 years old (or sooner) if they do not respond properly when tested.
• Never remove or disable a smoke alarm.

Additionally, protect your family by taking the time to learn about fire prevention specific to our area.

• Protect your property from Interface Fires
