NeighbourWoods

2009 NeighbourWoods Mayor and kids plantingIn its second year, the NeighbourWoods Program is a residential planting initiative developed by Parks Services to encourage citizens and communities to grow and preserve Kelowna’s urban forest. As planting a shade tree helps reduce household energy consumption, FortisBC is partnering on this project.

On October 24, 2009, nearly 100 residents in five different neighbourhoods participated in the pilot NeighbourWoods Program in an effort to increase the city's urban tree canopy.

Benefits of Trees

Trees improve air quality by removing atmospheric carbon dioxide, absorbing pollutants and producing oxygen. The average Canadian urban tree is estimated to remove approximately 200 kg of carbon over an 80 year lifespan. View the fact sheet PDF for more information on the Benefits of trees pdf icon.
