Cawston Avenue Multi-use Corridor

Latest news

Cawston Avenue between Cannery Lane and Ethel Street now closed for construction of the Cawston Avenue multi use corridor and timely utility upgrades.

Completion is schedule for November 2010.

Construction will be completed in phases, beginning at Cannery Lane on the north side of Cawston Avenue and ending at the connection of High Road with the Rails with Trails corridor.

Construction from St. Paul to Richter streets is anticipated to begin in mid July. Ethel Street to Gordon Drive is slated to begin at the beginning of August. Richter to Ethel streets will begin in mid August, and the final segment along Pheasant Street to High Road will begin in the middle of September.

Cawston Avenue will be open to local residents only during construction. Detours will be marked along the route and traffic personnel will be on site directing motorists.

Transit route #7 Glenmore will be re-routed to Wilson Avenue between Richter Street and Gordon Drive during construction. All transit stops on Cawston Avenue and Graham Street will be closed and riders are asked to use temporary stops located on Wilson Avenue. Service will be reinstated on Cawston Avenue upon completion of the project.

Introduction

Cawston Avenue Multi-use Corridor will provide a safe and convenient off-road pathway connection from Rails with Trails to the downtown waterfront and Cultural District.

The 1400 meter pathway will begin at High Road, to Pheasant Street, then extend along Cawston Avenue to Water Street.

  • Traffic calming features such as intersection bulb-outs and narrow traffic lanes resulting in reduced speed and traffic volume 
  • Wide boulevard with street trees and rest areas to create a "parkway" atmosphere

Cost: Approximately $3 million
        Funding in part by Infrastructure Stimulus Fund

Background

The City is developing a series of multi-use pathways and sidewalks that provide for sustainable cycling and pedestrian-oriented infrastructure. These will link key areas of the city and connect neighbourhoods, town centres, parks and schools.
