Sustainability and Growth Management

Growth management was the most mentioned priority issue by residents. Only one quarter of residents were very or extremely familiar with the City’s efforts to protect the environment.One quarter of people rated their satisfaction with City’s efforts to protect the environment as very or extremely satisfied. Half of respondents rated their level of satisfaction with these efforts as three out of five, which was likely tied to lack of familiarity.

Support for increasing taxes for additional sustainability programs for City operations was mixed. Three in ten would support increasing taxes and four in ten would not support a tax increase for additional sustainability programs.

Opinions about Density

Residents were split on the issue of increasing density as an appropriate way to accommodate growth and reduce urban sprawl with 50.2% agreeing with this statement. Residents were also split on allowing the development of high-rise towers in city centres as an appropriate way to increase density with 52.5% in agreement.

Social Issues

Residents were split on whether or not municipal governments should play a more active role in addressing social issues such as affordable housing, helping the homeless, and health care. Half were in agreement that municipal governments should play a more active role.

Many people listed affordable housing, dealing with the homeless, and health care as the most important issues facing Kelowna.
