Sustainability
As one of B.C.’s fastest-growing cities, Kelowna is committed to sustainability for the health and wealth of future generations.
Kelowna isn’t a new convert just jumping on the green bandwagon. We’ve been environmentally conscious for years, in fact we were one of the first cities in the province to hire staff dedicated to environmental issues.
The culture of sustainability is paramount in our planning, our policy direction and our infrastructure investment. We’re always looking for new ways the city can reduce its environmental footprint, improve its social cultural mosaic and the local economic climate.
Taking Action
Leading the way, City Council has endorsed a number of short term recommendations
from the City’s Sustainability Action Group focused on civic practices and operations reflecting the fact the City of Kelowna as an organization will need to “put its own house in order” before attempting to further influence the actions of other players such as developers, builders, home owners, and residents.
Part of that commitment includes participating in the provincial Climate Action Charter
. Take a look at the Kelowna Community Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory & Projections Report
which outlines the steps Kelowna will have to take in order to reach the goal of reducing emissions by 33% for 2012.
Awards & Recognition
Some of our projects, given their leading edge status, have been the subject of national and international interest for years. Others have been more recent.
Over the last few years, Kelowna's commitment to sustainability has been recognized provincially through the Green Cities awards. In 2008 Kelowna was selected as the runner-up in the population of 100,000+ category (View the 2008 nomination package
