Kelowna Tree Guide
Kelowna is located in Canadian plant hardiness zone 6a near Okanagan Lake, supporting a wide variety of ornamental and native plants. Winter temperatures become cooler at higher elevations and further away from the influence of the lake.
For more information, check the Canadian Plant Hardiness Zones maps, or consult your local nursery to make sure that a plant is hardy in your area.
Funded in part through a "Green Streets Canada" grant (Tree Canada Foundation and Natural Resources Canada), the MRP Arboretum was planted in fall of 2005. The official opening took place during Arbour Week (April 24-28, 2006).
The arboretum is planted along the path circling Mission Recreation Park and the adjacent Belmont Park (see map). The initial planting consisted of 213 trees (56 cultivated varieties) and more trees will be added in future. Tree species were chosen based upon attributes such as drought and pest tolerance, beauty and landscape value. FORTIS B.C. has also supplied additional funding for a portion of the Arboretum that showcases small trees, suitable for planting under power lines.
