Assistance Program for Property Owners with Pine Beetle Infested Wood
NOTE: The assistance program for wood pickup at private properties has ended for 2009. We hope to re-start the program in April 2010, pending funding availability. Call 250-469-8457 for more information.
Since 2006, the City has partnered with the federal government (Service Canada) to help public and private properties with pine beetle. in 2008, Service Canada provided about $292,000 in funding and the City of Kelowna $99,000 for this program. OK Works administered the program on behalf of the City. In 2009, the City has partnered with OK Works as well as Service BC.
Crews are not permitted to work on private property, but they can assist with some limited wood disposal if the logs are hauled to the property line. This program is only available to private land owners within the City of Kelowna boundaries, and the property must be readily accessible. Due to limited resources, our crews can only spend a maximum of two days at any particular property; we do not have enough funding to deal with large amounts of infested wood.
For more information call the Pine Beetle Hotline, 469-8457
How to Get Assistance Under the Program
|
1. Identify all infested trees on your property
|
- We recommend that you hire a qualified tree or pest management professional to help you identify all infested trees.
- If you need assistance, our Beetle Coordinator can help you to identify infested trees (but we do not have time to check every tree on larger properties). Call 469-8457.
|
| 2. Hire a contractor to remove infested wood and pile it neatly at the property edge. |
- The property owner is responsible for removal of infested trees and moving the wood to the property edge, so that Service Canada crews can haul it away. Our crews are not allowed to work on private property.
- Check the yellow pages under "tree services". Check this link for suggestions on how to hire a qualified person.
- Call the Beetle Hotline (469-8457) prior to removing trees, so that our Beetle Coordinator can schedule a pickup time and ensure that crews are able to access your site.
- Please stack the wood and branches neatly so that crews can easily chip it or take it away.
- Due to limited resources we can not spend more than two crew days at any one property.

3. For larger properties, you may require assistance from a logging contractor |
- If you have a large number of trees that can not be dealt with under this program, you may be able to get assistance from a logging contractor
- In order to transport logs off private property, the Province requires a Timbermark, obtained by filling out a one-page application to the Ministry of Forests and faxing to:
Wayne Anshelm Okanagan Shuswap Forest District Fax: (250) 549-5485 Phone: (250) 260-4629 Download a Timbermark application form here |
Note:
If you choose to grind or chip debris on your property, be careful not to create future fire hazards. Do not stockpile chips. If you choose to spread these materials on your property, try to keep the layer of chips as thin as possible. For more information, contact the City of Kelowna Fire Inspectors, 469-8801.
Most tree service companies / arborists are listed in the phone book; check the yellow pages under "Tree Service".
The following logging contractors may be able to help remove trees on larger properties. If you are a logging contractor and wish to have your name added to this list, contact 469-8457.
