The Current Gospel Mission
The Gospel Mission has outgrown its current location on Leon Avenue – more space is required to accommodate expanded programming and transitional housing. Furthermore, the surrounding area now houses a number of businesses open only at night and does not offer a supportive environment to those wishing to break the cycle of homelessness.
Since opening almost 30 years ago the demand for services at the Gospel Mission has risen dramatically. Since 1994 the number of bed nights provided has increased 170 % from 9,600 to 26,000 in 2004, while the demand for meals has increased 88 % between 1994 and 2004 (from 53,000 to over 100,000).
During the same time rescue missions around the world, including the Kelowna Gospel Mission, have changed their focus from short term care (meals and a bed) to a more comprehensive approach that includes recovery programs and transitional housing. In addition to shelter beds and meals the Kelowna Gospel Mission now offers recovery programs, counseling, hair cuts, dental services and a thrift store.
The Gospel Mission would like to expand its non-emergency services to truly help people get back on their feet. For example, over the past two years 35 men have graduated from “Choices”, a 6 to 12 month transition program. 75% of graduates now work full time and live independently.
