Stay on the nice list: keep drains FOG-free this holiday season

Don’t end up on the naughty list this year – keep your drains FOG free! Fats, oils and grease (or FOG) can give your drain pipes and sewer systems severe indigestion that lasts much longer than your delicious holiday dinners.

The number 1 cause of sewer blockages and overflows in Kelowna are the result of cooking oil and grease that are poured down sink drains or flushed down the toilet. When washed down the drain, FOG sticks to the inside of the sewer pipes on both your property and in the street. Over time can build-up and block an entire pipe.

Residents and businesses can help prevent messy FOG-induced sewer backups and keep our waste water collection systems running smoothly by adapting the following practices:

Never pour grease down sink drains
Put baskets/strainers in sink drains to catch food scraps and other solids, and empty them into the garbage
Scrape grease and food scraps into a can or other container or directly into the garbage for disposal
