Neighbourhood enhancing grants available

February 9, 2018

The City of Kelowna’s Strong Neighbourhoods grant program can help residents bring their neighbourhood enhancing project ideas to life. Grant guidelines and applications can be found online at kelowna.ca/neighbourhoods.

“With support from the Central Okanagan Foundation, the grant provides up to $1,000 in matching funds for projects that enhance neighbourhoods and foster neighbourhood connection,” said Tanya Sletten, Neighbourhood Development Coordinator. “Knowing your neighbours is important because good relationships with others who live around you can transform communities into safe, welcoming, and inclusive places to live. The Neighbourhood Grant can help stimulate neighbours to connect and help build relationships.”

Last year, more than 500 residents participated in eight projects, including the creation of a neighbourhood pantry, nectar trail and trail interpretive signage.

Residents in a Glenmore neighbourhood came together to create a nectar trail through the Bee a Part of your Neighbourhood project. “The project was both a social event to connect Glenmore neighbours around Redlich Pond and an educational opportunity to learn about the importance of pollinators, especially bees, and how our yards can be enhanced and maintained for their benefit” said Janice Loukras, project organizer.

While residents can apply any time, funding is released three times per year: March 2, June 1 and Nov. 2.

Residents not yet ready to apply for a grant can still start building neighbourhood friendships with the help of tips and tools found on the resources page at kelowna.ca/neighbourhoods. A simple "hello" can spark neighbourhood improvements.

The Strong Neighbourhoods Program is designed to empower residents and neighbourhood-based organizations to make their neighbourhoods even better places to live, work and play. Since the program’s inception in 2014, more than 4,100 residents have participated in 35 projects across Kelowna.
