Don't invite a FOG clog to Thanksgiving

October 7, 2021

Public Service Announcement

Don’t let a FOG clog be an unwanted guest in your home this long weekend! When poured down the drain, fats, oils and grease (FOG) stick to the inside of sewer pipes and can build-up over time, blocking entire pipes. Over the Thanksgiving weekend, residents are reminded to keep FOG off your sink drain menu.

Not only can FOG cause blockages in your household plumbing, it’s also the number one cause of sewer blockages and overflows in the city.

Residents can help prevent FOG-induced backups and keep our wastewater collection systems running smoothly by following these simple steps:

  • Cool it, can it, trash it. After cooking, put cooled oil or grease into a can or container and dispose of it in the trash. Never pour grease down a drain.
  • Put baskets/strainers in sink drains to catch food scraps and other solids and empty them into the garbage.
