Dark fibre for business
Does your business have rapidly growing data requirements? Is your business finding it difficult to meet your data needs on standard networks?
If so, our expanding dark fibre network might be the right solution for your business.
Often times businesses find their growth fast, which can cause issues with bandwidth being at capacity, leading to inefficiency, time delays and extra costs. With dark fibre, a simple upgrade to the fiber-powering equipment will provide an instant boost in network capacity and speed.

Using our dark fibre network takes some technical knowledge and time. It requires purchasing, installing, and running your own transmission equipment, which allows for total control over a network’s speed.
With speeds of more than 10GB, our dark fibre network can offer you a powerful connection that can match the highest speed, security and bandwidth demands. It also allows access to a variety of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and carriers.
Reliable & secure
Our Dark fibre network offers high reliability and security as it is a physical connection from point-to-point, with the fibre located in underground communications conduits. Since it is located underground, our fibre network is less likely to be damaged by vandalism or an accident with an aerial telephone pole.
Our network can also provide these benefits for a competitive flat monthly fee payable to the City of Kelowna. Please contact us for rates.
Businesses with multiple locations in Kelowna can use dark fibre to provide a private and secure connection between locations. Business complexes, shopping centres and office buildings can also lease fibre to provide current or prospective tenants with more choice in telecom service providers and access to scalable high-speed broadband.
Fibre optic cable securely carries vast amounts of information as light pulses and at high speeds. “Dark” fibre is unused fibre optic cable infrastructure. The fibre becomes lit (i.e. no longer dark) when an organization attaches network equipment and transfers data between points.
Businesses that typically benefit from dark fibre have high bandwidth needs, and require scalability and network control.
Some of our dark fibre customers are animation firms, and insurance, banking and post-secondary institutions. This includes UBC Okanagan, which requires data centers, high bandwidth and connectivity between multiple buildings. Many office buildings and developers are also using dark fibre technology to attract and maintain tenants.
Other industries that can benefit from dark fibre include:
- Manufacturing and logistics
- E-commerce and retail operations
- Hotels and hospitality establishments
- Financial institutions
- Internet providers and telecommunication companies
To communicate both internally and to our citizens, we have been growing and investing in our fibre optic network. The delivery of dark fibre to City facilities provides a wide variety of benefits to City services, including greater security, reduced risk of system downtime and dramatically improved bandwidth (i.e. facilitates video conferencing and other high-bandwidth data requirements with ease). This also provides opportunities for enhanced customer service because of improved bandwidth.
Since 2015, our network has now grown to 36 km, connecting City facilities, such as the Airport, Fire Department, Landfill and City Hall. Check out the map to see our current dark fibre connections.
Our dark fibre can be used to connect your business in the following ways:
- Head office to branch office
- Business to business
- Business to data centre
- Data center to data centre
