Fire Prevention Week

Fire Prevention Week takes place the week of Oct. 9 annually.  Despite the fact that fewer fire losses are reported in Canada, on average eight Canadians die from fire every week. 

During this week, Kelowna Fire Department has teamed up with the National Fire Protection Association and fire departments across the nation to raise awareness of the dangers of fire and educate the public on ways we can protect ourselves from fire. 

Don't Wait - Check the Date! ©

This year's theme, "Don't wait - Check the Date!©”, underscores the importance of checking the date and replacing the smoke alarm if they are ten years or older. Statistics show that working smoke alarms cut the chance of dying in a fire nearly in half - but they must be working properly to do so. By taking a few minutes to install or maintain a fire alarm, you could save the life of a loved one in an emergency.

Smoke alarm maintenance:

  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button, and make sure everyone in your home knows their sound.
  • If an alarm “chirps,” warning the battery is low, replace the battery right away.
  • Replace all smoke alarms, including alarms that use 10-year batteries and hard-wired alarms, when they’re 10 years old (or sooner) if they do not respond properly when tested.
  • Never remove or disable a smoke alarm.
