Sustainable Building Pilot Project

Kelowna is working on a “ Sustainable Building ” pilot project to identify and clarify building regulations, standards and codes that effect energy efficiency, as part of the federal/provincial Community Action on Energy Efficiency (CAEE) program.

The goal of the program is to promote energy efficiency and create a “cleaner” energy future.

Workshops

Workshops will glean input from all stakeholders, the various levels of government, the energy utility companies, developers, engineers, planners and contractors, to determine how the City can best implement and enforce sustainable building development.

It’s all up for discussion – energy and water efficiency, air quality, thermal comfort, lighting, waste management, even siting requirements.

  • What codes and standards should be changed?
  • What design elements will heighten environmental performance?

    Development Pilot

The second stage of the pilot project involves a partnership with FortisBC and a property owner in the design of a major development project to fine-tune specific criteria. A key result of the project will be a manual outlining sustainability opportunities and issues for new mixed-use development projects.

    Manual

The Sustainable Building Primer will allow other communities across the country to use Kelowna’s test case to refine their own codes and standards to further the development or retrofit of sustainable buildings. The manual will also serve as a single source of information about sustainable buildings, and as a directory for funding and incentive programs.
