smartTRIPS regional program
smartTRIPS is the Central Okanagan’s active transportation education program. smartTRIPS goal is to encourage all Central Okanagan residents to be healthy and active by reducing drive-alone trips. By biking, walking, riding transit, carpooling and other smart transportation options we benefit the community through better health, cleaner air and a healthier environment. Together we can improve the quality of life for everyone in the Central Okanagan.
smartTRIPS is a regional partnership between the City of Kelowna, Regional District of Central Okanagan and District of West Kelowna.
In the Spring of 2012 an individualized active transportation program was piloted in Kelowna’s Pandosy area. Pandosy smartTRIPS proved how small changes in your trip planning really can add up and make a big difference! Over a ten week program, 106 households signed up and almost 75% of participants used the trip tracking tool. Participants tracked more than 3,700 trips during the program, traveling over 13,000km, nearly the distance from Kelowna to the tip of South America!
The neighbourhood program
In 2013, smartTRIPS continues with the second neighbourhood - Springvalley smartTRIPS. Springvalley families are discovering their neighbourhood this Spring in a whole new way. Cycling, walking and taking transit are great ways to find little gems in your neighbourhood, and meet new people. This year, Springvalley and Quigley Elementary Schools are participating by finding the safe ways to get to school and learning bike riding skills.
