Engineering is responsible for the design and construction of City transportation projects and for the rehabilitation of existing infrastructure works.
Minor roadway designs are completed in-house by our own design technicians. These designs are reviewed, checked and sealed by a City Engineer. Major designs are usually completed by private engineering firms. Requests for proposals are issued to a select group of qualified firms. These proposals are rated and the design, whether it be conceptual, preliminary or final, is awarded to the successful firm. Meetings are held with the City and other affected groups throughout the design process.
Minor construction, base preparation and repair of existing facilities is often completed by City crews. Construction of major projects is put out for public tender and awarded to the lowest qualified bidder. Management of the project is generally done by the engineering firm responsible for the design and by the City. All work is inspected during the construction process to ensure required specifications are met.
